The provincial government of British Columbia has announced plans to implement a permanent prohibition on new cryptocurrency mining facilities, citing energy conservation priorities. This regulatory measure aims to preserve the province’s clean electricity resources for industries demonstrating stronger job creation and economic growth potential.
Energy Minister Josie Osborne emphasized that cryptocurrency mining operations consume massive amounts of electricity while generating limited local employment opportunities. The proposed ban would prevent new mining operations from connecting to the provincial power grid while allowing existing facilities to continue operations under current regulations.
The decision follows an 18-month temporary suspension on new crypto mining connections that was implemented in December 2022. Provincial officials noted that during this period, electricity demand from cryptocurrency miners would have powered approximately 570,000 households, representing a significant drain on the province’s renewable energy resources.
British Columbia’s move reflects growing global concerns about the environmental impact of energy-intensive blockchain operations. The province intends to direct its clean hydroelectric power toward sustainable economic development sectors that provide substantial employment benefits and community investment. The permanent ban legislation is expected to be introduced in the upcoming parliamentary session following public consultation periods.
