In a landmark development for cryptocurrency adoption in Latin America, major automotive manufacturers Toyota, BYD, and Yamaha have begun accepting USDT (Tether) payments for their products and services in Bolivia. The announcement was confirmed by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, highlighting a significant corporate embrace of digital currency solutions in the region.
This strategic move follows Bolivia’s historic regulatory shift in June, when authorities lifted the nation’s longstanding ban on cryptocurrencies and established a comprehensive regulatory framework. The policy change has already yielded dramatic results: according to Bolivia’s Central Bank, cryptocurrency payment transactions reached $294 million during the first half of 2025, representing a staggering 630% increase from the $46.5 million recorded during the same period in 2024.
The participation of globally recognized automotive brands signals growing institutional confidence in digital assets as viable payment instruments. This development positions Bolivia as an emerging leader in cryptocurrency adoption within South America, potentially setting a precedent for neighboring nations considering similar regulatory approaches to digital assets.
